Conversation: The Disagreement (Part 1)

This week on Functioning in Business, Mr. Mike Epstein and Ms. Shirley Graham (of Advanced Technologies) discuss Mr. Blake's proposal.

Ms. Graham is worried about doing business with Mr. Blake's company, International Robotics, a Chinese company. She thinks it would be safer to buy robots from an American company, United Industries. Mr. Epstein strongly disagrees.

Ms. Graham: You know, we've worked with United Industries before.
I think we should just go ahead on the deal with them.
I feel sure they can have everything installed and working by October 1st.
Mr. Epstein: Well, look, but there's another argument, Shirley.
I agree with you, they haven't established themselves in the States.
But that's an advantage.
We can get their technology before other companies can, if we're willing to take the risk.
I think we really have to take that risk.
Ms. Graham: Well, I think basically that's what it comes down to, Mike.
You want to take the risk, and I really am not willing to.
I don't feel I can afford to take the risk.

Answers to Last Week's Conversations

1: Checking into a hotel

Mr. Blake: What was the price of the room again?
Receptionist: That room is $120 a night.
Mr. Blake: Okay, fine.
Can I use my credit card for that?
Receptionist: Yes, certainly, sir.
Can I make a print of your card before we check you in?
Mr. Blake: Sure, there you are.
Receptionist: Okay. Thank you.

2: An important introduction

Mr. Epstein: Mr. Blake!
Mr. Blake: Oh, hi Mike. How are you today?
Mr. Epstein: It's good to see you, Charles.
This is our Vice President, Shirley Graham.
Shirley, this is Charles Blake from International Robotics.
Ms. Graham: It's nice to meet you, Mr. Blake.
Mr. Blake: Pleased to meet you, Ms. Graham.
Ms. Graham: How are you today?
Mr. Blake: Fine. And you?
Ms. Graham: Just fine.

3: At a restaurant

Mr. Epstein: Would anyone like some more coffee? Shirley?
Ms. Graham: Not for me. No, thank you.
Mr. Blake: Yes, I'd like a little bit more please.
Mr. Epstein: Okay. There's the waiter.
Waiter, could we get another cup of coffee over here, please?
Thank you.

Culture Tip: Taking Risks

Why do some American companies take big risks?

American stockholders want companies to increase their sales every year. To increase sales, the companies have to take risks on new products. For example, computer companies produce faster and better computers every year. But a competitor may produce an even faster one. Customers want the fastest computers at cheap prices. So managers really have to cut costs and produce better products at the same time. Companies have to work hard to keep one step ahead of the competition. And they have to take risks.
