The Functioning in Business radio course will help you learn American business English through listening to business meetings and discussions and to interviews with American business people.
With your radio host, Elizabeth Moore, you will follow the story of an important business trip. You will listen to conversations which introduce vocabulary and expressions used to conduct business in English. You will also listen to Business Dialogs which present many kinds of business situations.
Our business and culture expert, Gary Engleton, will offer Culture Tips about American business culture. Gary will also focus on important language functions used in business and social situations.
This week on Functioning in Business, Charles Blake of International Robotics finally meets with Mr. Stewart Chapman of Federal Motors.
Mr. Chapman apologizes for not meeting Mr. Blake earlier in the week. Mr. Blake reassures him that Mr. Gomez has been very helpful and that they have made good progress. Mr. Blake agrees to provide English service manuals and to provide English-speaking technicians to train the engineers at Federal Motors.
| Mr. Chapman: | And Dave said that you could send some English-speaking technicians to train our engineers. Is that correct? |
| Mr. Blake: | Yes, that's right. I said that we could provide some technicians. We haven't actually discussed a number. |
| Mr. Chapman: | So, that's still to be decided? |
| Mr. Blake: | Yes, but I can assure you that we will provide an adequate number. |
| Mr. Chapman: | Well, it's very important that they speak English well enough. We can't afford to waste time. |
| Mr. Blake: | Yes, I understand. |
"Has English really become the international language for business?"
In face-to-face business meetings, many different languages are used. But for business writing, English is the most popular language. Even if you can't speak English well, you need to be able to read it.
Today, most large corporations export their products all over the world. You have to include documentation with your products. And it's not practical to translate this information into every language. English has become standard.
In addition, businesses have become increasingly dependent on e-mail and the Internet. And the dominant language of the Internet is English.
Finally, most of the important scientific and business journals are in English. If you want to keep up in business, you need to read English.

Marvin Telleman is talking to Rebecca Chang, a salesperson for Middle Kingdom Tours, a travel agency. Mr. Telleman is arranging a tour for some clients in the toy business.
| Mr. Telleman: | Ms. Chang, I was told that you arrange industrial tours. |
| Ms. Chang: | Yes, that's correct. |
| Mr. Telleman: | And my understanding is that you can arrange visits to Chinese toy factories. |
| Ms. Chang: | Yes. We've done many tours of toy factories for foreign business people. |
| Mr. Telleman: | That's great. They're particularly interested in traditional toys. Can you arrange that? |
| Ms. Chang: | What do you mean by 'traditional'? Can you give me some examples? |
| Mr. Telleman: | Uh, well, I mean dolls, toy cars, and so on. That kind of thing. |
| Ms. Chang: | That's no problem. No problem at all. But could you send me a more detailed description of what your clients would like to see? |
| Mr. Telleman: | Certainly, I'll have them e-mail a list to you. |
| Ms. Chang: | That would be wonderful. And I'll start contacting some factories immediately. |
| Mr. Telleman: | Thank you. They'll be very pleased. |
