Conversation: A New Beginning

This week on Functioning in Business, Charles Blake of International Robotics is having dinner with Stewart Chapman and Dave Gomez of Federal Motors.

They have agreed to do business together and they are celebrating the beginning of a new business relationship.

Mr. Chapman: Would you like some more wine, Charles?
Mr. Blake: Please.
Mr. Chapman: How about you, Dave?
Mr. Gomez: No, thank you.
Mr. Blake: I'd like to propose a toast!
To a long and prosperous relationship between Federal Motors and International Robotics.
Mr. Chapman: I'll drink to that and add a toast of my own!
To our next game of golf!
Mr. Blake:
Mr. Gomez:
Cheers.

Culture Tip: Work and Family

"How do Americans balance work and family?"

That's not an easy question, and it doesn't have an easy answer. The situation has changed a lot during the past thirty or forty years. In the past, most men worked and many women stayed at home with their children. But now, in most families, both parents work. And many American fathers and mothers share responsibility for raising their children.

Childcare can be a big problem for parents who have to work long hours. In some cases, fathers and mothers don't work full-time. They work part-time or they work flexible hours, so that they can spend more time with their children.

More and more American companies are trying to help. Some companies have become more flexible about work hours. And some companies even have daycare centers for their employees' children. Even so, many Americans have to make a difficult choice: Which comes first: their family or their work? It's never an easy choice.

Business Dialog: Regrets and Sympathy

Pauline Bush is retiring as President of Smith Construction Company. She is talking to her good friend Harry Marsh, the new president.

Mr. Marsh: Well, Pauline, I'm going to miss you.
Ms. Bush: I'll miss you too, Harry, but I've got to do this.
Mr. Marsh: I understand. It's important that you spend more time with your family.
Ms. Bush: I've been here thirty-two years.
I've never worked for another company!
Mr. Marsh: That's rare these days.
Ms. Bush: I've enjoyed my years here, but I wish that I had spent more time with my kids when they were growing up.
Mr. Marsh: I know what you mean.
Ms. Bush: My oldest son has two kids of his own now!
Mr. Marsh: Oh, I remember when he was just a baby.
Ms. Bush: Once he started school, we spent much less time together.
I regret that, but I'm going to spend lots of time with my grandkids.
Mr. Marsh: Well, I wish you the best of luck.
Ms. Bush: You'll be President now and I know that you'll do a great job!
Mr. Marsh: I appreciate all of the advice you've given me over the years.
Ms. Bush: It's been great working with you, too.
