Week Twenty-Two

The New Dynamic English radio course will help you learn English through listening to conversations with Americans.

This week, on New Dynamic English, Kathy talks with Denise Collins, Mike Johnson, and Martha Harris.

Denise Collins likes to eat healthy foods, especially vegetables She's a very good cook. Tonight she's going to make spaghetti.

Mike Johnson rides his bike to work every day. When he rides his bike, he always has a bottle of water with him. He drinks eight glasses of water a day!

Martha Harris writes mystery stories. She uses a computer to write her stories. She also uses her computer for e-mail.

This Week's Study Activity:

This week, Denise talks about healthy foods. She likes to eat healthy foods.

Now look at the Five Food Groups page from Woolworths web site.

Are these statements True or False?

True False  
 x      Fish is good for you.
        Vegetables and fruits provide vitamin C.
        Eating bread and potatoes will make you fat.
        You should eat at least four vegetables each day.
        Most people need 3-4 glasses of water a day.
        Butter is more fattening than margarine.
        Low-fat milk is good for children less than four years old.

Conversation with Denise Collins

Denise: Tonight I'm going to make spaghetti.
Kathy: What will you need?
Denise: I'll need some tomatoes and onions.
And some cheese.
Kathy: How many tomatoes will you need?
Denise: I'll need eight tomatoes. Eight large tomatoes.
Kathy: And how many onions?
Denise: Only one. I'll only need one onion.
Kathy: And how much cheese?
Denise: Only a little. I won't need very much cheese.
Oh,... and of course I'll need a package of spaghetti.

Practice 1: "Many" or "much"

Fill in the blanks with "many" or "much."

  1. How many tomatoes will Denise need?
  2. How        cheese will she need?
  3. How        packages of spaghetti will she need?
  4. How        onions will Sam buy?
  5. How        spaghetti will Sam and Denise eat?

Conversation with Mike Johnson

Kathy: Mike, do you ever drink coffee?
Mike: Yes, I do. I love coffee.
Kathy: How many cups of coffee do you drink a day?
Mike: Oh, I drink about two or three cups a day.
Kathy: What about tea? Do you drink tea?
Mike: Oh, I sometimes drink tea.
Kathy: How much tea do you drink?
Mike: I don't drink a lot.
Sometimes I drink a cup of tea in the evening, before I go to bed.

Practice 2: "How much" and "How many"

Make questions to go with these answers. Use "how much" or "how many."

1. coffee How many cups of coffee do you drink?
or
How much coffee do you drink?
Two or three cups a day.
2. coffee                             Quite a lot.
3. tea                             Not a lot.
4. water                             At least eight glasses a day.

Conversation with Martha Harris

Kathy: Do you like e-mail?
Martha: Oh, yes. It's very convenient and it's faster than the mail.
If I send a message today, it arrives today.
And it's less expensive.
It costs less to send an e-mail message than to send a letter.
Kathy: So you're really an e-mail fan.
Martha: Yes, I guess I am.

Practice 3: Scrambled Sentences

Unscramble these sentences.

Last Week's Practice 1: Answers

Many farmers use chemical pesticides  to  kill insects.
These pesticides can  get  into the water.
There are natural pesticides  which  are safer.
Natural pesticides won't  hurt  people.
Some farmers  use  natural pesticides.
And some farmers  don't  use pesticides at all.
We would have less pollution with  fewer  pesticides.

Last Week's Practice 2: Answers

The Washington dance company is  larger  than Chicago's.
The salaries are  higher  in Washington, too.
The dance company in Washington is  bigger  than Chicago's.
The ballet company in Chicago is  smaller  than Washington's.
The salaries in Chicago are  lower  than in Washington.
It might be  better  for Chris to move to Washington.

Last Week's Practice 3: Answers

Brighton is about an hour south  of  London  by  train.
I'm here  in  Washington  on  vacation.
Were you born  in  England?
I was born  in  the United States.
Do you think you'll ever move back  to  the US?
I like living  in  England.
But I may move back  to  the US sometime.
Or maybe I'll move  to  another country.

Daily Dialog: At a Restaurant

Listen to the dialog. Fill in the missing words.

Tom: I'm dying for a cheeseburger.
Lorrie: That sounds good.
Waiter: May I take your       ?
Tom: I'd like a cheeseburger and some fries, please.
Lorrie: The same for me... but fries are so fattening...
I'd like a small salad        of fries.
Waiter: Anything to drink?
Tom: Just a        of water, please.
Lorrie: Some water for me, too, please , and... no cheese on my burger.
Tom: No cheese?!!
Lorrie, it's a cheeseburger!
Lorrie: And, uh, ... just a        meat. I'm on a diet.
Tom: Lorrie, are you sure you want a cheeseburger?
Lorrie: Oh, I guess not.
Maybe I should just get a salad.
But a cheeseburger sounded so good!
